Canadian Immigration Forecast for 2021 and Beyond – What do the numbers project?
Canada wants you, yes, you read it right. If you are an immigrant who is already in Canada and plan to permanently settle here by obtaining a permanent residency or if you have been planning to pursue higher studies in this country, the timing is just about right!
COVID-19 pandemic left all the industries miserable, immigration in particular. As per the reports suggested by CIC News, Canada accepted 341,000 immigrants in the year 2019 and it was even set to accomplish a greater number of immigrants in 2020 but the immigrant’s hopes were left upended due to the pandemic, even though the programs like Express Entry and PNP (Provincial Nominee Program) still continued to function despite the travel restrictions imposed by the government, the number of immigrants entering the country was significantly low.
This downfall in the number of immigrants directly impacted Canada’s economy because there are a large number of job opportunities but there is a shortage of potential workers to seek those jobs, as a result, immigration and the GDP of Canada have a positive relationship.
A Ray of Hope
The current situation might look gloomy, but the future does not look so bleak after all. The minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Mr. Marco Mendicino earlier announced a new immigration level plan for 2021-2023, which aims to welcome 400,000 new immigrants per year, adding up to a whopping 1.2 million immigrants in 3 years which is the highest level in the history. As a result, certain new programs like, Agri-Food Pilot Program, Rural Northern & Immigration Pilot Program have been put in place to ensure that the target is achieved by the end of the year 2023.
The New Work-Permit Program
Under this new work permit program, international students are encouraged to apply for an additional open work permit which will be valid for another 18 months, this is enforced to ensure that the students who failed to secure a job and gain the valuable skilled work experience required to apply for their permanent residency due to the pandemic, can now get enough time to find work in Canada. The Federal department stated that over 52000 graduates could benefit from this program.
Immigration Numbers Set to Explode
After witnessing a downfall of 45.9% in 2020 in the number of citizenship applications as compared to the previous year, Canadian Immigration Department has put in place a new system where the citizenship tests can now be taken online, which makes Canada the first country in the world to offer these tests online.
IRCC has already started putting steps in place in order to achieve the immigration targets for this year. The express entry system saw a surge in the number of invitations to apply, issued under the program. A total of 10000 invitations have already been issued solely in the month of January 2021.
Both Permanent Residency and Citizenship applications are expected to see an upward surge but these applications could be fairly tricky and even those minor errors in the files often lead to rejection of applications, don’t let these errors guide your future.
