The United Kingdom has announced significant changes to the financial requirements for immigrants planning to study or work there, effective January 2, 2025.

Updated Financial Requirements for Students:

  • Within London: Students must demonstrate a minimum of £1,483 per month for living expenses.
  • Outside London: A minimum of £1,136 per month is required.

For example, a student enrolling in a one-year master’s program in London would need to show proof of £13,347 (£1,483 × 9 months) for living costs, while a student outside London would need £10,224 (£1,136 × 9 months).

These funds must be maintained for at least 28 consecutive days before applying for a study visa.

Changes for Family and Skilled Worker Visas:

  • Family Income Threshold: The minimum income requirement for family visas will increase from £18,600 to £29,000, with a further rise to £38,700 anticipated in early 2025.
  • Additional Funds for Children: Applicants will need an extra £3,800 per year for the first child and £2,400 for each additional child.Skilled Workers: First-time applicants must show earnings above £29,000 to support themselves and cover accommodation costs in the UK.

These measures aim to ensure that immigrants can financially support themselves and their families without relying on public funds.

Implications for Prospective Students and Workers:

Prospective students and workers should prepare to meet these increased financial requirements when planning to move to the UK in 2025.
